TFJ Challenge: Sunday in the Park

Hello and welcome to a new challenge for The Funkie Junkie Boutique BlogSunday in the Park Weather-wise, you might not be spending time outside in the park, but we've all got memories of playing in one! Get out your stamps, dies, mixed media, or embellishments that remind you of what you might see on a beautiful sunny day in the park. Make a Tag, Panel, or even a 3D project, & bring the outdoors into your craft space!

This week I was inspired by the prompt to create a journal spread. I have decided to take a slightly different direction and create scenes from two national parks. I would love to one day visit Yosemite National park in the U.S and Kootenay National Park in B.C  Canada. For video click here.
Used: Distress paints mowed lawn, twisted citron, rustic wilderness, picket fence, mermaid lagoon, prize ribbon, black foot, salty ocean, and peeled paint, alpha numeric varsity, woodgrain colorize die, mountain top, fir trees, and tree line, Idea-ology design tape and marbled tape.
For this journal spread I am working out of a Dina Wakely mixed media art journal.
The first step I take before starting a spread is to lay down a coat of gesso. This gives me a clean work surface and something that will allow paint to grip the page and not seep through it.
With the layer of gesso dry I then spritzed the page with the distress water sprayer and then added some drops of Distress paint. I used salty ocean, broken china, mermaid lagoon, blueprint sketch, and speckled egg.  Here I am starting to make the skyline.
Then I spritzed the paint again and let the paint flow and start to marble.
To get more movement I added some additional water and used the Ranger heat tool to move the paint around. This then gave me the look of sky and flowing water.
Next I started filling in some green paint to make the land and mountains. To start I spritzed the page with water and then added the Distress paint. For paints I used: twisted citron, rustic wilderness, mowed lawn, and peeled paint.
Again I added more water and let the paint flow. I also moved the paint around using the heat tool.
Now let’s jump into some die cuts. For the Yosemite side of the page I started with some die cuts from mountain top. For this die cut I used metallic kraft stock, Idea-ology cool colors kraft stock, and some distress white heavy stock.
I also die cut a variety of trees from die sets tree line and die trees. These I die cut out of Idea-ology worn wallpaper and Distress inked papers I had in my background stash.
Now comes the fun part. I played around with true die cuts and arranged them into a forest. Fortunately I did not need to glue down each tree. Prior to die cutting I added double sided tape to the backs of the papers. Now they are easy to add to the journal just like stickers.
With all the trees in place I then die cut some colorize woodgrain to make a sigh. For this national park. I die cut woodgrain out the mitral Idea-ology paper pack. For the lettering I delved into alpha numeric varsity. For paper I used the purple from the cool colors Idea-ology kraft stock.
On the other side of the page where I am working on a scen from Kootenay National park I started with some of the tree line die cuts to start to build up the forest.
With the trees in place I then used some hickory smoke Distress paint to add in a cliff face to overlook the river.
For finishing touches on the scenes I added in details with some black soot Distress paint. Again I also made a sight from woodgrain and alpha numeric varsity die cuts.
While I was very pleased with these scenes I wanted to do something more and really highlight each scene. To do this I decided to make a tape boarder. In the middle I added some Idea-ology fabric ticket table to act as a dividing line.
Next I ran Idea-ology marbled tape around the edges of each scene. I cut the tape in half lengthwise to fit the page.
Then on each side I added a highlight of design tape from Idea-ology on the inside of each frame.
Below is the finished journal spread for Sunday in the park. I hope in the future I will get to spend a Sunday in one of these parks.
Thank you so much for joining me here today at the crafty corner. Until next time, we happy crafting!

  2. Wow, Janna! So cool and very realistic. That mountain actually looks like Half Dome. We were fortunate enough to get to visit so many national parks when we were kids and I enjoyed Yosemite. I have never been to any in BC, though; I hope you get to realize your dream to visit both.
