TFJ Challenge: A Study in Contrasts

This week for the new Funkie Junkie Challenge we are playing to the theme of “A study in contrasts” The seasons are changing and the cold greys and browns of winter are giving way to the warm greens and colors of spring! For your challenge highlight contrasts in your project. It could be themes, colors, textures or forms. We are looking forward to seeing your creative interpretations and juxtapositions of things that are contrasting!”

For this challenge I will be looking specifically at the color wheel and color contrasts. Below I have recreated the color wheel using Distress colors. For video tutorial click here.

The color wheel is divided into different sections. Below are the three  customary divisions.

Primary Colors

Secondary Colors

Tertiary Colors

Using the color wheel we can also make color schemes and combinations. Here are a few examples below.

Complimentary Harmony

(Colors directly across from one another on the color wheel)

Analogous Harmony

(Three colors side by side on the color wheel)

Rectangle (tetradic) Harmony

Colors forming a rectangle on the color wheel.

Square Harmony
(Four evenly spaced colors on the color wheel)

Triadic Harmony
(Three colors on the color wheel evenly spaced.)

Split Complementary Harmony
( Taking Triadic Harmony and moving two colors from the original triadic position inwards. X represents original position.)

For my project today I have decided to work with the prize ribbon, aged mahogany, and mustard seed to form a split complimentary cold scheme over a background of black and white.

Supplies used: prize ribbon, aged mahogany, and mustard seed, 3D embossing folder damask, black soot oxide reinker, distress white heavy stock, brushstroke butterflies, foundry wax sterling, foam squares, collage medium, squeezers, and Idea-ology flash cards.

For the first step in creating this card I started with some embossing with the Sizzix folder doily and some distress white heavy stock.

To help emphasize contrast in colors I decided to go with a black and white color theme in the background. To do this I used some black soot distress oxide reinker and brayered it into the interior of the 3D embossing folder. This could also be done with a distress oxide ink pad by rubbing it on the interior of the embossing folder.

Then I spritzed the interior of the folder with the distress mister. Next I placed the paper into the folder and then ran it through three times through the vagabond.

Here are the results of the embossing.

Now lets embellish some brushstroke butterflies. I die cut one of each butterflies and then inked each of them. For colors I used distress oxide mustard seed, distress inks aged mahogany, and prize ribbon.

With all the butterflies inked I then spritzed some water droplets on the butterflies to give a distressed look.

Here are the three distressed butterflies in split complementary colors.

Now to add some shine to our butterflies. Here I am adding some distress foundry wax sterling to the accent pieces on the butterflies. To add the foundry wax I drizzeled some foundry wax onto the craft media mat portion of my work space. Then I waited for the foundry wax to start to solidify before brushing it onto the accent pieces. If the foundry wax is brushed on too soon then the paste will sink too far into the paper, wait to long and the foundry wax will turn to dust.

Once all the pieces where painted I took out a pair of squeezers and heated each of the pieces with an embossing tool.

With the accent pieces covered in foundry wax I then added some color to the centers of each butterfly. for the centers I used distress black soot.

Here are the finished butterflies with their foundry wax accents.

Now lets assemble the card. On the back of each butterfly I added some foam squares to give this card some dimension.

For a sentiment I added an Idea-ology flash card edged with sterling foundry wax.

Here are the end results for the them of a study in contrasts. My contrasts for this card were a color scheme of split complementary colors and a contrast of textures, smooth and textured.

Thank you so much for joining me here today at the crafty corner. Until next time, happy crafting!
