For this challenge I have decided to feature this super cute colorize penguin Eugene on some holiday decor. For video details click here for part 1 and here for part 2.
Used: beaded berries, crimson alcohol ink, bottle brush trees, distress spray stain tree lot, holly branch, bubbling cauldron, snow flurries, and frosted juniper, marquee letters, bubbles, metallic cardstock, collage medium, distress glitter, distress mica flakes, distress textures icicle and snowfall, distress glitter tinsel, and etcetera trim, distress crayon frosted juniper and picker fence.
With collage medium on the bubbles I then used the distress glitter duster to add glitter to them. This then gave me some frosty snowballs.
To alter the berries I first used some collage medium and distress glitter tinsel.
Simply dunk a berry in the collage medium and then dip it into the glitter and tap off the excess.
I also altered the berries using some crimson alcohol ink. Simply apply one drop of alcohol ink to the berry and then let dry.
Here are some of the crimson dipped beaded berries.
Now we will alter some bottle brush trees. To add color to the tress I will be using distress mica spray stains holly branch, tree lot, and bubbling cauldron.
To start the alteration I first spritzed the trees with water and then added the spray stain.
Once the trees were spritzed with color I then dried them off with the Ranger heat tool. Now to add some sparkle. I added few dots of collage medium to the trees before dipping them into some distress mica flakes.
Here are our completed trees.
Next I will be making a word banner. To do this I am pairing the Idea-ology marquee letters over some kraft metallic cardsock. This banner will spell out Merry Christmas.
I cut the metallic cardstock into strips of 3/4in an inch by 8in. Then I cut 1.25 sections to back each letter. Each letter was attached to the cardstock with a staple. For this alteration I would recommend using a tiny attacher since they have small staples.
Once all the letters were stapled to spell the words Merry Christmas I then cut little triangles in the bottom of each letter pair to make a mini banner.
For the word Merry I decided to hot glue the mini banners to a string. I also used the remnant rub tool to help smoosh the hot glue onto the string.
Then I put together four pieces of etcetera trim to make a ledge.
I stacked four etcetera layers together and glued them with collage medium to make a shelf.
Once the shelf was dry I then painted it with some picket fence.
On the top of the ledge I added some snowfall. Then on the front of the ledge I added some icicle texture medium.
When the icicle medium was dry (that took about 45min) I then smooshed some picket fence distress crayon between the cracks to give the ledge a more icy look.
For the last Idea-ology alteration I decided to color some crinkle ribbon with distress mic spray stains. I used snow flurries and frosted juniper.
To start I crumpled up the ribbon and then spritzed the crinkle ribbon beforeadding the distress mica spray stain.
Then I dried the ribbon off with the Ranger heat tool.
Below are our altered pieces of seasonal Idea-ology pieces.
Now we will start to assemble the pieces for the etcetera tag. Used: large etcetera tag, distress paint salty ocean, salvaged patina, picket fence, speckled egg, prize ribbon, Ranger texture paste snowfall, collage medium, collage paper type set, Sizzix dies Eugene, Mountain top, and tall pines. Click
here for part 2.
To start I put down a foundation of white gesso onto the etcetera tag.
Once the gesso was dry I then added a spritzing of water. Then I put down some drops of distress paint. The colors of paint I used were: speckled egg, prize ribbon, salty ocean, and salvaged patina.
Then I sprayed the tag again to get some movement in the paint.
I also used a paint brush to help move the paint about to get a marbled look on the tag.
Once I was happy with the paint distribution I then dried the tag with the Ranger heat tool.
With the tag dry I then decided to do some collaging along the bottom of the tag. I used the Tim Holtz Type Set collage paper to do so. Next I tore the collage paper into jaggedy bits.
Next I glued on the collage paper with some collage medium.
Here are the finished collage results.
Then I added in the ledge. The ledge was added to the tag with some hot glue.

Now it is time to build a scene. For the background I decided to use the die set mountain top to act as a foundation to build the rest of the scene on.
For the mountain I used distress heavy stock white, brown from the kraft neutral pack, and some gun metal grey metallic cardstock. All of the kraft stock papers I have been using today have been coated with double sided tape to make die cut assembly easier.
For the next layer I added in some tall pines. These were die cut from the cool kraft stock paper pack and then I spritzed them with some distress mica spray stain tree lot.
With the trees speckled I then added them into our wintery scene.
After I added some more snowfall to the tag.
Once the snowfall texture paste dry I then hot glued down the bottle brush trees to the ledge.
Then the snowballs were glued into two piles on the ledge with hot glue too.
For the main focal point of this project I decided to feature Eugene the Colorized penguine.
For the die cut pieces I cut some pieces from scraps and other pieces I watercolored with distress reinkers. I used the colors hickory smoke, black soot, carved pumpkin, and crackling campfire. All die cut pieces also had double sided tape on them.
Here is our finished penguin. For more in-depth detail check out the YouTube video. Click
here.
Now I attached the word banner onto the tag with some cloth tape tucking the strings around the back of the tag.
For the second set of letters I decided to attach them below the ledge using some sticky foam tape to pop them up.
For finishing touches I added the crinkle ribbon around the tag reinforcer ring and treaded in the beaded berries that we altered earlier in this tutorial.
For the berries I formed clumps of threes and twisted the wirers around the crinkle ribbon.
The last element I added to this etcetera tag were some leafy greens from the die set garden greens. These I tucked under the beaded berries and secured with collage medium.
Fabulous post with so much love and attention to detail given to every inch of your mixed media tag. With it's dusted snowballs and sweet little colourize penguin, he certainly looks happy surrounded by that magical winter scene you have created for him. Beautiful and inspiring.
