The challenge theme for this week is  Funkie and Frilly. Make a frilly project - add some lace, buttons, and other fun embellishments. We'd love to have you join in the fun by posting a project with buttons, lace or any funky and frilly embellishments. There is a chance to win a $25.00 gift card to the store.

For the Funkie and Frilly challenge I decided to make a thank you card and combine new and old Tim Holtz Sizzix dies. While frilly isn’t my typical style it was fun to find different dies that would fit the theme. The new Varsity Alpha Numeric and the 3D butterfly worked out perfectly to help create this frilly and Funkie thank you card.

On this card I used a variety of die cuts and the distress paint resist technique. For video instructions click here . Below are the materials I used for this card. The supplies that I used for this card are: Sizzix dies crochet, alpha numeric varsity, and 3D butterfly, distress paint iced spruce, distress inks kitsch flamingo, picked raspberry, and abandoned coral, stamp set CMS430 floral outlines, Ranger TH brayer, collage medium, TH Idea-ology backgrounds set 1, Distress white heavy stock paper, acrylic stamping block, and mini ink tool with dome foam

To start this card I will be using the distress paint resist technique. To do this technique you will need a brayer, distress paint (I like to use iced spruce or antique linen), a stamping block or platform, and a stamp set.

First put a few drops of distress paint onto the kraft mat of my glass media mat and rolled some onto the brayer. Then with a few light rolls of the brayer I spread distress ink onto the stamp.

I have found that distress paint dries faster then ink so I quickly stamped my image on the paper. Then I stamped the other two images in the stamp set using the same technique.

Then I set the card base aside to dry. Next I die cut out a 3D butterfly with some metallic TH cardstock. The detail on the butterfly is fantastic. I wanted to highlight some of that detail and used the brayer to add some white distress picket fence paint over the raised ridges of the butterfly.

The distress paint was able to highlight some of the details.

Now it is time to continue with the distress paint resist technique. Here I selected three distress inks to make the background: picked raspberry, kitsch flamingo, and abandoned coral.

With the mini ink blending tool and some dome foam I blended the three colors on the card. As seen below the paint doesn't absorb the ink. The ink blending took several rounds of layering before building up a vibrant background.

Here is the almost finished background. The stamped image is fairly visable, but there is ink still sitting on top of flowers.

To make our image nice and clear I took some paper towel and gently misted it with a little bit of water.

Then very gently I dabbed and rubbed off the excess ink sitting on the distress paint stamped images.

Here we can see the clear image of the stamped florals. I also added a few drips of water and then dried them with the Ranger heat tool.

With our background done it is not time to add some layers and embellishments to the card. Here I cut one of the TH Idea-ology backgrounds into a strip of 2.5in x 4.25in.

Then I adheassed the paper strip to the card front with some ATG tape.

Time to add some trim. For a lacy look I die cut some crochet pies from this die set. I used the second piece down from the top. I cut the pieces out on some distress white heavy stock. For this die I cut it out on a Vagabond. To get a clean cut I used the Sizzix chrome precision plate.

Next I glued the die cut pieces to the top and the bottom of the card. For adheasive I used some collage medium and spread it directly onto the card front before sticking down the lacy trim. Another time I think I would use some double sided tape instead and put that on the back of my paper before die cutting it.

With the lace in place I then took the 3D butterfly wings and sniped out the middle part.

Then I glued the wings onto analtered paper doll to give her fairy wings. The paper doll was colored with distress reinkers over frosted crystal embossing powder.

I then stuck the fairy onto the card using foam squares under the wings and some collage medium.

Now time to play with some new die cuts. For the sentiment I decided to die cut using the new alpha numeric varsity die set.

Before die cutting I arranged the dies on some sticky back grid on a side kick plate. I love using sticky grid since it keeps small dies from moving all over the place and slipping while cutting.

I die cut these twice, once with some distress heavy white cardstock and a pinkish mauve cardstock from the Idea-ology warm colors pack. I die cut twice so I could have the outline of the lettering in a contrasting color.

When you look closely at these dies you will notice some impressions that mimic stitching! I love this little detail and wanted to draw more attention to it. To do this I used a white gel pen and drew little white lines where the stitching detail was on each die cut.

After adding the markings to all of the die cut pieces I glued them onto the card front using collage medium.

Here is the finished card for the theme of funkie and frilly. I had lots of fun creating this card and it definitely pushed my creative boundaries to try different color combinations that I might not normally use.

Thank you for joining me here today and until next time happy crafting!
