This week I am please to announce The Funkie Junkie Boutique will be hosting a creative challenge on their challenge blog to the theme of I'm Feeling Like Royalty
and the challenge description:
"On June 2, 1953 the then 27 year old Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom. I thought why not honor this event by having a challenge that includes inspiration from royalty. Think crowns, castles, elegant and regal patterns, or gilding your project with touches of gold! Create a shabby chic or vintage project inspired by royalty!"
Everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team.
Here is my take on the theme "I'm Feeling Like Royalty".
Today I decided to do a journal page for this royal theme. I love mixed media and journaling allows me to play with multiple techniques. I am going to break down this journal spread into three parts and discuss a couple of the specific techniques I used. If you would like video instruction check out my Youtube channel The Crafty Corner with Janna. Click here for link. The first technique I want to highlight is embossing resist and Distress spray stains.
For this first element of the journal spread we will need the following supplies: distress sprayer or other water mister, substrate of choice, distress spray stain chipped sapphire, distress sprays stain oxide speckled egg, and squeezed lemonade, splatter brush, distress paint picket fence, Tim Holtz stamp set CMS369 Architecture, and Ranger white embossing powder. For the substrate I decided to cut out a 6in circle and then coated it with white gesso. I chose a gesso base because I wanted my background to be very fluid looking.
First wipe your substrate with an anti static pouch or duster. I like using one because it will help reduce extra stray bits of embossing powder where you don't want any. Then using my Tim Holtz stamping platform I stamped the cathedral stamp from the stamp set Architecture onto my substrate twice with distress embossing ink.
Next over some scrap paper I sprinkled on the Ranger white embossing powder. Then I tapped lightly on the edge of my paper to remove excess embossing powder.
Now it is time to melt the embossing powder with an embossing gun. I worked my way around the edges with the embossing gun to get even melting and then into the center of the circle.
With the embossing powder melted it is now time to add some color. I started by adding some water with the distress water sprayer over my substrate. Adding the water gives the distress spray stain a more fluid look and allows it to move freely over paper.
I started with chipped sapphire and let it spread out over the embossing powder. As you can see above the melted embossing powder resist the fluid distress spray stain and the stamped image remains crisp and visible.
\
In between each layer of color I dried my substrate with the Ranger heat tool. The heat tool is perfect for this because it won't melt the embossing powder again. Then I added some of the distress oxide speckled egg spray stain to start building up depth in my background.Once I was satisfied with my layers of blues I started dripping on some of the squeezed lemonade oxide spray stain. To get the drippy look I slowly squeezed the spray mechanism to get droplets instead of a mist. Then I dried the droplets in place with the heat tool.To finish off this portion of the journal layout I added some walnut stain distress oxide around the edges of the cut out circle. If you would like to view the whole process of making this one element click here to view the corresponding YouTube video. For the next element of the journal layout I am going to be making some customized stickers to place in the background with some Tim Holtz Idea-ology metallic label stickers and some archival distress ink. First I am going to cut apart the sticker sheet to make stamping a bit easier. I am going to be stamping with some acrylic blocks and using the stamp sets: CMS Tiny Toadstools, CMS269 Mini Bouquet, and CMS Faded Type.
For stamping I am going to stamp parts and pieces onto the sticker elements using black soot, faded jeans, and hickory smoke. Then I will fill in the gaps with little fill in the blank stamps from Tiny Toadstools. In between color changes I am wiping off my stamps with an old rag.
This is a quick and easy idea when you want to add some customized embellishments to a project.
For my main focal point I will be altering a Tim Holtz paper doll. For video instruction on technique click here. My favorite way to customize these is to dress them up with some altered idea-ology collage paper. For this step you will need: plain collage paper, distress sprays mustard seed, and oxide spray squeezed lemonade, collage medium, scissors, and some sticky back gems.
To start this technique I cut three sections collage paper to about 4inx6in and one section of 6inx2in and sprtitzed them with the distress sprayer.
Next I sprayed the collage paper with mustard seed distress spray stain. Then I added some distress distress oxide spray in squeezed lemonade along the edges. The smallest section did not get any of the squeezed lemonade oxide spray.
Next I dried the collage paper with the Ranger heat tool.
Now it is time to embellish the the collage paper with some urban elements. (CMS398)
Here I have stamped out some urban elements with distress embossing ink. After stamping with an acrylic block I sprinkled the collage paper with some Ranger gold embossing powder and heat embossed it with an embossing gun.
Above is the results of the embossing.
For the next step I accordion folded three pieces of the decorated collage paper.
Now lets alter our paper doll. Any paper doll will do for this technique. I prefer ones that have a full dress so there is more space to glue embellishments to. This paper doll is from the Tim Holtz Halloween collection.
To start I cut around the arms of the paper doll so I would be able to tuck collage paper around the doll to form her new dress.
First I adhered the full skirt. I started with one piece in the center and glued it down. Then I layered the other two pieces of her skirt to the left and right hand sides. I also tucked corners of the collage paper around the back of the paper doll to help shape the skirt.
Now it is time to add the top part of her dress. I cut a small 1inx3in piece of collage paper and accordion folded it.
Pinching the accordion folded piece like a fan I then glued it to where the bodice of the dress would be on the paper doll.
Next I started work on the sleeves. I cut two pieces of collage paper at 1.5inx1.5in. Then I folded them into a triangle like shape, but with room to slide over the arms of the paper doll.
With the sleeves glued in place I cut a piece of white velvet ribbon next at about 2.5in and glued it around the paper doll's waist.
The last element I added to the paper doll was a few sticky back gems to accent her belt.

Next I need a few more embellishments for the journal page. I decided to work with some Tim Holtz Engravings elements from Idea-ology. To color these I used the following products: Frosted Crystal embossing powder, TH water brush, distress embossing dabber, reinkers in TH ink pallet, and an embossing gun.
To start I embossed the Engraved elements with frosted crystal embossing powder.
Then I painted on color with the TH water brush using the reinkers. I love how the frosted crystal just absorbs the color and allows the previously slippery surface to hold color.
Here are the finished results of painting on frosted crystal.
Now onto the journal page. To start the page I painted it with a layer of white gesso. To make the background I am using Picket Fence, speckled egg oxide spray, picked raspberry spray stain, and squeezed lemonade spray stain.
To start the background I misted the page with water and the spritzed on my colors. I layered and spritzed colors about three times before I was happy with the background. Between each layer I always dry with the Ranger heat tool. For the last layer I do droplets of water by half squeezing the distress sprayer trigger. This gives the looks for droplets on the page when dry.
Next it is time to start adding all of our embellishments. This is my favorite part, because then a page starts to pull it self together. I started by placing the stickers down onto the page.
Then I added the large circle background over the top with some collage medium. I noticed while gluing down the circle that some of the stickers were trying to peel up so I added a layer of collage medium over them too.
For the next layer I glued down the Engraved embellishments around the edge of the circle.
Then I added the main focal point to the page, the altered paper doll. To finalize the look of royalty about her I added a little crown that I had stamped from urban elements and embossed and colored in gold.
And of course I also added some clippings stickers as well. I love mixing and matching these fun little snippets
And now a few close up pictures of the finished journal page.
Thank you for joining me for some crafty fun. I hope these techniques and ideas will help to spark your creativity. Don't forget to join in the fun at the Funkie Junkie blog challenge to the theme of I'm Feeling Like Royalty Until next time happy crafting! ~Janna๐๐จ
